Cruise ships, cargo and a Cairns destination

Published: 1 February 2018

The Port of Cairns is gearing up for a whirlwind month with nine cruise ships and three project cargo vessels heading to our wharves.

February cruise shipping begins with the popular Pacific Aria docking at the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal (CCLT) on Monday February 5, carrying approximately 2000 passengers and crew. She arrives at 0930hrs and departs the following day at 1700hrs.

Just a couple of wharfs down, another installment for the Mount Emerald Wind Farm arrives on February 6, with the cargo being 48 tower sections.

On February 7, the Sea Princess will arrive at the CCLT carrying up to 2,900 passengers and crew. She is expected in at 0900hrs and will depart at 1700hrs.

And on February 8, the final shipment for the wind farm will be discharged, and will consist of 12 tower sections, 26 hubs, 26 Nacelles and 11 x 40ft containers.

“I think we are seeing our Port working at a great capacity in both the tourism and industrial sectors,” Ports North Chairman Russell Beer said.  “These last two windfarm unloads conclude what has been a very successful project cargo contract for Ports North that has certainly made the industry look up and take notice of our capabilities,” Mr Beer said.

Another project cargo shipment, on Feb 19, will unload 63 Break Bulk Packages for transportation to MSF Sugars’ co-generation power plant project being built at their Tablelands Mill.

“Three project cargo deliveries in one month is quite significant and the fact that it all runs seamlessly while cruise ship visitation is at a high, underlines our multi-purpose strengths,” Mr Beer said.

The CCLT will also welcome the cruise ships Asuka II, Seven Seas Voyager, Artania, Viking Sun (maiden call) Regatta, Crystal Serenity and Silver Whisper throughout February.

“This month is the precursor for strong year for the Port of Cairns with some 56 cruise ship visits during 2018, many of them overnight, and seven with Pacific Eden who will be home-porting once again in Cairns.”
