Port of Karumba Channel Dredging begins

Work has begun on channel maintenance dredging at the Port of Karumba.

The work is being carried out by the Port of Brisbane using the TSHD Brisbane, with two bed levelling vessels, the Pacific Titan and Laurie M, assisting. Some 210,000 cubic metres of material will be moved over a period of approximately 28 days.

The last dredging campaign was in 2018, and enabled a return to operations for New Century Resources and a channel depth suitable for their barge operations.

The need for this year’s campaign was identified following consultation with port users about the prolonged wet season and associated flood events and a subsequent post wet season hydrographic survey conducted by Ports North earlier this year.

Environmental monitoring for marine fauna and recording of events will be undertaken by the contractor, and overseen by Ports North, which is consistent with our Long-Term Dredge Maintenance Management Plan.
