Ports North board meets Mourilyan hub

Published: 28 April 2017

The Board of Ports North is visiting the busy Port of Mourilyan today to inspect the port and highlight the value of its expansion to a meeting of stakeholders from the region.

The visit coincides with a third shipment of magnetite out of the harbour bound for China.  Board Chairman Russell Beer said since taking over the Port of Mourilyan in 2009, Ports North has worked to develop the Port of Mourilyan particularly around the exporting of bulk commodities.  Mr Beer said “it’s part of a two-port strategy that will see the continued growth both of the Port of Cairns and the Port of Mourilyan into the future.

“While the sugar industry is critically important to the port, Ports North has invested in the port in recent years and will continue to do so in the future to grow the cargo through the port. We see this natural deep water port as a perfect export hub for targeted, mediumsized, bulk exports into the future” he said.
Going forward Ports North has capital allocations for the development of future land in the port to facilitate further export opportunities going forward.  Mr Beer said Ports North is working with a number of potential future port users across a diverse range of products ranging from sand, minerals, containers, fuel and cattle.
