Cairns Welcomes Back Iconic Superyacht M/Y Octopus for Extended Stay

Published: 26 September 2025

Cairns will once again play host to the one of the world's most prestigious superyachts as M/Y Octopus returns for an exclusive month-long stay at Cairns Marlin Marina - Australia's largest dedicated superyacht berth.

The visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Superyacht Group Great Barrier Reef, (SYGGBR) marking a major milestone for the region's superyacht industry.

The extended stay of M/Y Octopus comes on the back of the stunning M/Y Liva's visit and highlights the substantial economic impact to the local economy of superyacht visitation to the region.

The presence of these vessels highlights the immense economic contribution superyachts make to the Great Barrier Reef region. These vessels inject tens of millions of dollars into the regional economy over short periods - through fuel, provisioning, maintenance, tourism, berthing and crew spending.

From marine servicing and coordination to hospitality and local tourism, Octopus will generate significant business across a wide range of industries during her stay.

Superyacht Group Great Barrier Reef Manager Jodie Growden said having M/Y OCotpus return to the GBR not only for the 25th anniversary year, but also coinciding with the silver anniversary Dockside celebration event is particularly special.

"The arrival of M/V Octopus demonstrates how far we've come as an industry, from occasional stopovers to hosting month-long visits that directly support dozens of local businesses.

"Her stay underscores the confidence international owners place in our region and reinforces our status as the superyacht capital of the Asia-Pacific."

Ports North Manager of Operations Damien Cranswick said Cairns Marlin Marina had successfully positioned itself as a year-round base for Superyachts.

"This is a great injection for the region and highlights the Marina's appeal both in terms of location and proximity to the Great Barrier Reef and marine infrastructure available and a well-established marine services network.

"Superyacht visitation continues to grow Cairns and the region's growing reputation and ability to manage very large vessels, and all their service requirements is well known."

Superyacht Group Great Barrier Reef will host an exclusive celebration at Sailfish Quay, with the iconic vessel providing a spectacular backdrop. The event will bring together industry leaders, local stakeholders, captains, and crew to mark the milestone anniversary and the growing strength of the regional superyacht sector.
