Cruise ships on the March

Published: 11 March 2020

The cruise ship Artania, will be the first to arrive at the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal tomorrow (FRIDAY March 6) in what is set to be the busiest month of arrivals for 2020.

Ten ships will visit Cairns in March, with three making their maiden calls.

“We are seeing some real results for cruise ship visits since the shipping channel was widened and deepened as part of the Cairns Shipping Development Project,” Ports North Chairman Russell Beer said.

“Last week we witnessed the fantastic Queen Elizabeth coming through the leads and making her first call, becoming the largest ship to have ever entered the Port. Get ready for a few more spectacles this month.”

Tomorrow, Artania will dock in the Port of Cairns at 0730hrs arriving from Darwin and carrying approximately 1230 passengers and crew. The ship is scheduled to depart at 1830hrs bound for Townsville.

On Saturday, the beautiful boutique sail-cruise ship Wind Spirit makes her first call to Cairns when she arrives at 0730hrs from Noumea, carrying 177 passengers and crew. She will stay overnight in the Port and depart at 1400 hrs on Sunday headed for Townsville.

“As with all of our first-time visitors, Wind Spirit’s Captain will be presented with a commemorative Plaque from Ports North to mark the occasion,” Mr Beer said.

“Over the month, we can expect approximately 18,270 passengers and crew visiting our city; making the most of the many and varied tours on offer in the region, and bringing a much-needed boost to our economy.”

Mr Beer said that among the highlights would be the arrival of the MSC Magnifica at 293m in length and with the capacity to carry a massive 3,605 passengers and 1,027 crew members.

She will be making her first ever visit to Cairns, as will the Grand Class cruise ship, Golden Princess, now able to enter the our harbour.
